About French Terry
French terry is knit with the same face loops as terry toweling but with uncut loops on the reverse side rather than cut-pile loops. The smooth face makes the fabric suitable for garments where the exterior is visible and a soft texture is desired, while the looped interior creates air pockets that provide thermal insulation without the added weight of thick fleece. The uncut loops also act as moisture reservoirs — absorbing perspiration during activity and releasing it as the fabric dries — making french terry the preferred fabric for activewear worn during and after exercise. Weight typically ranges from 220 to 340 g/m²; heavier weights are used for sweatshirts and hoodies while lighter weights suit jogger pants and athletic shorts. The knit construction gives moderate four-way stretch without the addition of elastomeric yarns.
