About Lightweight Jersey

Single jersey is produced by a single set of needles on a circular knitting machine, creating a fabric with a distinct face (smooth V-loop appearance) and back (horizontal purl loops). At weights below 180 g/m², the resulting fabric has low mass per unit area, which produces excellent drape — the fabric falls close to the body rather than holding structural shape. This makes lightweight jersey ideal for fitted T-shirts and layering pieces where body-conforming silhouette is desired. The lower weight also means reduced fiber density and therefore increased translucency: fabric quality, backing color, and undergarment choice become visible considerations. Lightweight jersey is typically constructed from cotton (combed or carded), cotton-modal blends, or lyocell-cotton blends for improved softness and drape.
