About Selvedge Denim 14oz
14 oz selvedge denim is produced on narrow (28–32") projectile or shuttle looms that produce a tightly woven, self-finished edge (the "selvedge" or self-edge) rather than a cut edge requiring serging. Ring-spun yarns — in which loose cotton is twisted around a core of slightly longer fibers — produce an uneven yarn diameter that creates the irregular surface texture visible in the finished fabric and responsible for the irregular, high-contrast fade lines valued in raw denim aging. The 14 oz weight places the fabric at the boundary between moderate and heavyweight denim: heavy enough to hold structure in five-pocket trouser construction and produce dramatic fades, light enough to break in within 6–12 months of wear. Indigo dyeing at this weight typically requires 12–16 dips in the dye vat to achieve saturated color with sufficient reserves for long-term fading.
