Polyester — formally polyethylene terephthalate (PET) — is produced by melt-spinning a polymer derived from purified terephthalic acid and monoethylene glycol. Its linear molecular chains pack tightly during crystallization, yielding high tensile strength, low moisture absorption, and excellent dimensional stability across temperatures. These properties make polyester inherently wrinkle-resistant and quick-drying, though the low moisture regain (0.4%) means perspiration is not absorbed but must be transported mechanically across the fiber surface in moisture-management constructions. Fine-denier recycled polyester (rPET) is now widely used to meet sustainability targets without sacrificing performance.
